Our History

Henry DeJesus Sr. saved the English crumpet from extinction in the area, and in doing so, began a family tradition.

Three generations later, the tradition continues with the expansion of Sharrock's onto the World Wide Web.

About Sharrock's English Bakery
(from an article in the Standard Times)

Growing up in the South End of New Bedford, Massachusetts, Henry DeJesus Sr. became a man with a mission - to save a disc-shaped, flat English bread from extinction in the South Coast.

Described by Karen DeJesus as a cross between a pancake and an American-style English muffin, the crumpet is a soft yeast bread.

Above all, it's free of cholesterol, sugar and fat, touts Ms. DeJesus, who is also the director of the UMass Dartmouth Gerontology Center.

Beaming with pride, Ms. DeJesus describes how the torch of the DeJesus family's SouthCoast crumpet empire has been passed along through three generations: from father Henry Senior, to son, Henry Junior and his wife Judy, and to granddaughter Karen.

Crumpets from Sharrock's English Bakery

In a labor of love, Henry Jr. by hand makes about 600 packages of six crumpets a day.

After their humble beginning in a South End bakery, the DeJesus crumpets have been praised by Boston Magazine. In 1997, they received the Best of Boston Magazine citation for crumpets.
